Apple battery supplier TDK Corporation on Thursday inaugurated a Rs 3,000-crore lithium-ion battery plant in Sohna, Haryana. The Japanese firm said the factory will begin small-scale production in the fourth quarter of this calendar year and gradually ramp up to a capacity of 20 crore battery packs annually, based on customer demand.
Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw, who inaugurated the facility, said it marks a major milestone in India’s effort to build a complete electronics manufacturing value chain. “This plant will manufacture about 20 crore battery packs every year, meeting nearly 40% of India’s requirement for mobile phone batteries. It also has huge expansion scope,” he said.
The Sohna plant will supply batteries for mobile phones, wearables such as watches and earbuds, laptops, and wireless devices. TDK counts Apple, leading smartphone brands, and laptop makers among its key customers.
Vaishnaw added the project, set up under the government’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme, will directly employ over 5,000 people. Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh said the factory is spread over 180 acres and is expected to give a strong boost to the state’s manufacturing ecosystem.
“This facility is open for all industry players looking to source lithium-ion batteries,” said Fumio Sashida, CEO of TDK’s Energy Solutions Business Company.
