Apple and Google have entered into a multi-year partnership under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be built using Google’s Gemini AI models and cloud infrastructure. Google announced the collaboration via an X post and as per the announcement, the collaboration is aimed at strengthening Apple Intelligence features across iPhones, iPads and Macs, including a more personalised version of Siri expected later this year.
According to an official announcement shared by Google, Apple selected Google’s AI technology after evaluating multiple options, concluding that Gemini provides the most capable foundation for its upcoming AI roadmap. While Google’s models will underpin the intelligence layer, Apple said Apple Intelligence will continue to run on-device and through its Private Cloud Compute framework.

How the partnership works
Under the agreement, Apple will rely on Google Gemini models and Google’s cloud technology to support large-scale AI workloads. Apple, however, will retain control over how these models are integrated into its software ecosystem. The company stressed that user data will not be shared with Google for advertising or profiling purposes.
Apple Intelligence will continue to prioritise on-device processing wherever possible. For more complex tasks that require cloud compute, Apple said requests will be routed through its Private Cloud Compute servers, maintaining the company’s existing privacy architecture.
Impact on Siri and Apple Intelligence
One of the most visible outcomes of the partnership will be improvements to Siri. Apple has confirmed that the next version of Siri will be more context-aware and personalised, using the new foundation models to better understand user intent, follow-up queries and on-device context.
Beyond Siri, Apple Intelligence features across writing tools, image generation, summaries and system-wide automation are expected to benefit from more capable underlying models, while remaining tightly integrated with Apple’s hardware and software stack.
Strategic implications
The deal marks a notable shift for Apple, which has historically focused on developing core technologies in-house. By partnering with Google for foundation models, Apple appears to be prioritising time-to-market and capability depth, while still maintaining differentiation through privacy, integration and user experience.
For Google, the partnership positions Gemini at the core of one of the world’s largest consumer ecosystems, extending its influence beyond Android and web-based services.
What happens next
Apple is expected to roll out the first wave of Gemini-backed Apple Intelligence features later this year through software updates. Further enhancements are likely to follow as the partnership evolves.
