  • Claude's new homepage features ad-free chats, unlike ChatGPT's ad tests.
  • Anthropic promotes Claude as a calm, ad-free option in the AI chatbot competition.
  • Sam Altman calls Anthropic's messaging misleading, fueling public debate

Anthropic has given its AI chatbot Claude a fresh new homepage and it is hard to miss the message it is trying to send. The update includes a short, friendly introduction that many users see as a clear jab at OpenAI, ChatGPT, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, especially at a time when ChatGPT is experimenting with ads.

The new greeting on Claude’s homepage starts off politely. “Hey there, I’m Claude. I’m your AI assistant for working, imagining, and deep thinking.” It then lists a few things users should know. Claude invites people to ask anything, mentions built-in safety guardrails, and then lands a punchline that has since gone viral online. “Ad-free chats. I won’t show you ads.”

That single line has sparked a lot of chatter on social media. Many see it as a direct response to recent reports that OpenAI has begun testing or planning ads in ChatGPT, including for free users. The idea of ads appearing in the middle of conversations has not gone down well with everyone, especially those who value uninterrupted chats.

By contrast, Anthropic is clearly positioning Claude as the cleaner and calmer alternative. No sponsored messages, no sudden product pitches, just conversations. The timing is also interesting. Only recently, Anthropic aired a series of Super Bowl ads poking fun at the idea of ads inside AI chats. In those ads, an AI assistant suddenly shifts from being helpful to awkwardly selling random products, ending with the line, “Ads are coming to AI. But not to Claude.”

Sam Altman did not stay quiet. Responding on X, he said the ads were funny and even admitted they made him laugh. But he also accused Anthropic of being misleading, calling its messaging dishonest. He went further, claiming Anthropic mainly serves wealthier users and describing the company as restrictive, while also highlighting how widely ChatGPT is used for free.

The rivalry has deeper roots. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI employees, including Dario Amodei, and the competition between the two companies has grown more public and more personal over time.

Online reactions so far suggest that many users are enjoying the drama. Some see Anthropic’s move as a clever and bold marketing play, while others view it as a genuine stand on user experience. Either way, the battle over how AI should be funded and what users are willing to tolerate is clearly heating up.
