Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday announced that he has moved his official email to Zoho Mail and asked people to use his new address for future correspondence. The short post on X made the switch official and asked followers to note the change.
“Hello everyone,I have switched to Zoho Mail. Kindly note the change in my email address. My new email address is amitshah.bjp @http://zohomail.in. For future correspondence via mail, kindly use this address.Thank you for your kind attention to this matter,” he wrote.
The move comes as Zoho has been riding a wave of attention in India, thanks in part to the buzz around its Arattai messaging app, which some users have hailed as a potential WhatsApp rival, and a broader push for homegrown tech. That chatter has helped other Zoho products, including Zoho Mail, gain greater visibility among officials and professionals.
Why Zoho? The company positions Zoho Mail as a privacy-focused, ad-free email service with features that appeal to professionals and small businesses, including custom domain support, built-in productivity tools, and industry-standard encryption. Zoho’s pricing and “forever free” options for small domains have also made it attractive to users looking to move away from larger global providers.
Practical guides and how-tos for migrating from Gmail to Zoho Mail have already started circulating, aimed at individuals and small businesses who want a smooth switch without losing old emails or contacts. For many, the combination of control over the inbox and a local data-hosting option is a strong selling point.
Reaction on social media was quick. Supporters called Shah’s move a boost for India’s tech ecosystem and aligned it with the “vocal for local” spirit, while some tech watchers noted it is largely symbolic unless more public bodies and institutions follow suit. Either way, a senior leader’s public shift to a homegrown email service will likely add momentum to the conversation about digital sovereignty and privacy in India.
