AI features may be the same, but form factor changes how users use them, says Samsung president Dr. Won-Joon Choi

Samsung’s latest foldables—the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7—bring more than just hardware refinements this year. While the design has been made thinner, and the Z Fold7 now features the new Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy chipset and a 200-megapixel main camera, it’s the subtle software shift that marks a bigger change in how users interact with their smartphones. According to Dr. Won-Joon Choi, President and COO of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience Business and Head of R&D Office, Galaxy AI is evolving—and the form factor of the device plays a key role in that evolution.

In a conversation with Moneycontrol, Dr. Choi said that while Galaxy AI features are consistent across bar-type phones like the Galaxy S25 and foldables like the Z Fold7, the way users engage with those features is fundamentally different. “Because of the large screen, the users will get to have the AI experience that is not available on the bar type,” he noted, referring to multitasking capabilities and unique screen configurations that foldables enable.

The Galaxy Z Fold7 runs One UI 8, which now supports a multi-modal AI experience powered by Google Gemini Live. While this assistant is available on other Galaxy devices, it becomes more practical on the Fold7’s large display—allowing users to speak to Gemini while screen sharing and receive contextual responses based on what’s visible. For example, a user can point to a food image and ask for nearby restaurants serving it, or even book a reminder without switching apps.

The same interface also helps when multitasking. Dr. Choi explained that users can open multiple windows to make AI interactions more productive. This could be as simple as dragging an image into one pane, and a room photo into another, and asking Gemini whether the design matches—an experience far more natural on a larger display.

Features like Photo Assist and Generative Edit also benefit from the screen size. These tools let users move, resize, or erase objects from photos and fill backgrounds using AI. While similar tools exist on other Galaxy phones, editing with a stylus on a tablet-sized screen results in more precise control and better usability. Similarly, background noise removal in videos—through the upgraded Audio Eraser—feels more intuitive when previewed in larger viewports, especially when accessed directly from the Gallery app.
