While the state is confident of reaching its $1 trillion economy status over the next 4-5 years, Fadnavis said that it could even touch $1.5 trillion if planned properly.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on February 24 said that the state, which has country’s financial capital Mumbai, is also set to become the leader in artificial intelligence (AI).

The state accounts for nearly 60 percent of the India’s data centres created in Navi Mumbai, he said. Fadnavis was speaking at the tech industry body Nasscom’s flagship event, Nasscom Technology and Leadership Forum 2025 in Mumbai.

He shared that MoUs (Memorandum of understanding) worth $20 billion to build data centres were signed at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month.

“Maharashtra will be a leader in AI. 60 percent of data centre capacity of India is built in and around Navi Mumbai…we are already a data centre hub and we have now created a new data centre park in Navi Mumbai,” Fadnavis said.

In January, the state government had bagged an investment of around $8.3 billion from hyperscaler major Amazon Web Services’ (AWS') larger $12.7 billion investment plan to develop cloud infrastructure in India by 2030.

Since data centres needs lot of power, the Maharashtra government is generating green power, starting initially with a “mix of green and conventional power for data centres,” Fadnavis said.

By 2030, Maharashtra wants to have 75,000 gigawatts of power, and 52 percent of it coming from green and non-conventional sources, a significant jump from current power capacity of 45,000 gigawatts, he added.

Becoming $1.5 trillion economy

While the state is confident of reaching its $1 trillion economy status over the next 4-5 years, Fadnavis said that it could even touch $1.5 trillion if planned properly.

“Niti Aayog and our experts have put in a paper where they think that Maharashtra can become a trillion-dollar economy in next 4-5 years, but if we work properly, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) itself can become a $1.5 trillion economy.

That’s what we are now leveraging that ability and capability to become $1.5 trillion economy,” Fadnavis said.
