Meta is on a hiring spree, and it’s targeting OpenAI’s top minds. After recently bringing in a prominent researcher, Trapit Bansal, Meta has now hired four more AI experts from OpenAI, according to a report by The Information. The new hires are Shengjia Zhao, Jiahui Yu, Shuchao Bi, and Hongyu Ren — all respected researchers in the AI field.
This wave of hiring comes shortly after Meta launched its Llama 4 AI models back in April. However, the models reportedly didn’t perform as well as CEO Mark Zuckerberg had hoped. Some versions even drew criticism for how they performed in popular AI benchmarks.
The talent battle between Meta and OpenAI has been heating up for months. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously hinted that Meta was offering eye-popping signing bonuses — even claiming offers went as high as $100 million to lure AI experts away. Meta’s CTO Andrew Bosworth responded, telling employees that while some senior leaders were indeed offered huge deals, the real terms were “more complex” than just a simple lump sum.
Clearly, Meta is doubling down on AI and isn’t slowing its hunt for top talent. As the race to dominate the AI space continues, this back-and-forth between two of the biggest names in tech shows just how fierce — and expensive — the competition has become.
