Nintendo’s latest console, the Switch 2, has debuted to blockbuster sales, moving over 3.5 million units globally within just four days of launch. Released on June 5, 2025, the hybrid console now holds the title for the fastest-selling hardware in Nintendo’s history during an opening window.
The Switch 2 builds on the wildly successful legacy of the original Switch, but introduces meaningful upgrades aimed at both casual and hardcore gamers. Chief among them: a larger, more responsive display, enhanced processing and graphics, and the redesigned magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, which promise better precision and ergonomics.
Nintendo is also banking on new social features to redefine multiplayer. The headline-grabber is GameChat, which allows users to voice or video chat with friends—and even screen share—all while gaming. It’s activated via the new C Button on the Joy-Con 2, and marks a notable step forward in online connectivity for the platform.
The console launched alongside a strong first-party title, Mario Kart World, available exclusively on Switch 2. In Japan, a Mario Kart World Set bundle—which includes a digital copy of the game and a Japanese-language console—is being marketed as a budget-friendly entry point for new buyers.
The numbers suggest Nintendo’s strategy is working. Whether it’s the upgraded hardware, the emphasis on social play, or the strength of its launch titles, the Switch 2 is shaping up to be a major success story for 2025. While demand is sky-high, Nintendo says more units are on the way to meet global interest.
