Paralympic Gold medallist Navdeep Singh wins PM Narendra Modi's heart with 'touching' gesture

Para-athlete Navdeep Singh has arguably been living some of the best days of his life, starting from the recently concluded Paralympics. The 23-year-old finished second at the F41 category javelin event, assuring him of a silver. However, inappropriate actions by his competitor Beit Sayah Sadegh of Iran led the Indian to a gold, and on Thursday, the 23-year-old shared a heart warming moment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the video of which was shared by the PM on his social media account.

Navdeep presented the Prime Minister with a cap and took an autograph on his throwing arm. The two also shared a light hearted conversation, in which the Prime Minister asked him about his angry reaction during the event, the video of which has drawn mixed reactions on social media.

PM also sat down on the floor to allow Navdeep to present him with the cap. Sharing the video on his social media account, the Prime Minister wrote: "A very touching gesture by my friend and India’s pride, Navdeep Singh!"

If we take a note of the conversation between the two, which was in Hindi, the Prime Minister asked "have you have seen your video or not. How do you perform with such aggression." To which, Navdeep replied, "last time (Tokyo Paralympics) I had finished fourth. And before leaving for Paris I had promised you, so the promise has been delivered."

Earlier in the day, the Prime Minister hosted India’s Paralympians at his residence in New Delhi to commend them for their remarkable achievement of winning 29 medals. Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Devendra Jhajharia, the head of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), were also present during this meeting. India gave its best-ever performance in the Paralympic Games by winning 29 medals, including an unprecedented seven gold, nine silver and 13 bronze medals. The 84-strong contingent surpassed the previous best of 19 medals that was achieved in the Tokyo Games three years ago.
