Yashasvi Jaiswal’s unfortunate run-out brought an abrupt end to a promising partnership with Virat Kohli in the Boxing Day Test of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Friday.
The dismissal came on the final ball of the 41st over bowled by Scott Boland. Jaiswal, in a moment of indecision, drove a full-length delivery on off-stump crisply towards Pat Cummins at mid-on and immediately set off for a single. Kohli at the non-striker’s end tried to assess the situation, shouted against the run, and held his ground—but Jaiswal was already committed.
This gave Australia an easy opportunity to inflict a run-out, which they did. Cummins threw the ball at the striker’s end and wicketkeeper Alex Carey quickly collected the ball and broke the stumps to complete the dismissal.

The dismissal was a major setback for India, occurring just 20 minutes before Stumps on Day 2. Jaiswal and Kohli had rebuilt the innings from 51/2 to a solid 153/2 before the untimely run-out. Jaiswal, who was on set towards his second ton of the series, was dismissed for 82 off 118 balls.
This also led to a major distraction as Kohli once again fell victim to a delivery wide of the off-stump. In the next over bowled by Boland, Kohli tried to poke a delivery on a line that has been troubling him and got a faint edge in the process, which was collected by the wicket-keeper. Kohli was dismissed for 36 off 86 balls.
The twin blows once again shifted the momentum into Australia's favour. Moments later the hosts removed night watchman Akash Deep from the middle on 0, which reduced India to 159 for 5.
Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja then saw off the final moments of play on Day 2 and took India to 164/5 at Stumps as the visitors trail by another 310 runs at the MCG.
