All results were possible heading into Day 5 of the Headingley Test between England and India. Both teams had a clear task on the final day of the first Test in the five-match series — England needed 350 more runs to take a 1-0 lead, while India required 10 wickets to secure victory. The visitors appeared slightly nervous during the first hour of play, as Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley negotiated the new ball well and offered few chances.
As wickets remained elusive, the Indian bowlers — particularly Mohammed Siraj — were seen approaching the umpires to request a change of ball. Siraj asked on-field umpires Chris Gaffaney and Paul Reiffel for a ball change midway through the 14th over.

However, the umpires found no reason to replace the ball, as it passed the ring test. Siraj was again seen requesting a change of ball after the completion of the over. But once more, the ball passed the ring test, thus the outcome remained the same. Siraj, Shubman Gill, and KL Rahul were all upset and frustrated by this whole series of events.
Following the third delivery of the 22nd over, Shubman Gill went up to Chris Gaffaney once more. But the outcome was the same. The ball passed the ring test when the drill was repeated, and the same result was obtained. The Headingley audience expressed their disapproval by booing Shardul Thakur when he addressed the umpires two balls later.
The whole crowd began cheering as soon as the ball entered the ring. Before the 27th over began, India was eventually able to persuade the umpires.

India's star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was spotted in the field with excitement despite not taking any wickets. Fans laughed when he actually appeared to sledge the umpire. After careful inspection in the 27th over of England's second innings, the umpires finally decided to switch the ball. Jadeja performed a small fist pump while glancing at umpire Chris Gaffaney.
