Rohit Sharma scripted yet another record on Wednesday (October 29). The 38-year-old, who now plays only one format - which is the ODI, dethroned Shubman Gill to become oldest cricketer to attain No. 1 position in the ICC rankings in the format. Rohit achieved the feat as 38 years and 182 days old and this also marks the first time the former India captain attained the top ranked position in his illustrious career.

The latest update in the rankings saw Rohit jump two spots and now has 781 rating points. The second and third position are occupied with Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran (764) and Gill (745) respectively.

Rohit, who made a return to Indian colours for the first after a long gap of seven months, showed promising signs in the three-match ODI series against Australia. Although India lost the series 1-2, he finished as the leading run-scorer by amassing 202 runs from three innings at a staggering average of 101.00.

Starting the series with a disappointing 8 in Perth, Rohit followed it up with 73 off 97 in Adelaide and an unbeaten 121 off 125 balls in Sydney. His knock in Sydney saw him share a match-winning 168 off 169-ball partnership with Virat Kohli.

Kohli had scored an unbeaten 74 off 81 in the Sydney encounter but had failed to open his account in the first two matches. This saw him drop down to sixth. He has 725 rating points.

Gill had replaced Rohit as the new ODI skipper ahead of the series, raising questions over his and Kohli's participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be played in South Africa.

Although the question on their future still looms large, both the players and the BCCI have remained away from making any commitments.
