Chennai Super Kings spent an unprecedented INR 32.30 crore on wicket-keeper batters for the IPL 2026 season. A figure that depicts the franchise is getting ready to move on from MS Dhoni. CSK's aggressive keeper purchases are more than just squad depth; the legendary keeper batter is being readied for what looks to be the conclusion of his career.
The figures are startling. During the IPL 2026 mini-auction, CSK purchased 19-year-old Kartik Sharma for INR 14.20 crore, making him the joint most expensive uncapped Indian player in IPL history. Prior to that, they paid the Rajasthan Royals INR 18 crore for Sanju Samson in exchange for Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran.
With Urvil Patel's retention, CSK now has four wicketkeeper-batters in the team. For a team that has relied entirely on Dhoni behind the stumps since 2008, this depth is unprecedented.
During the recent auction, head coach Stephen Fleming verified the strategic change. “We were looking at the fact that at some point MS will move on," he stated candidly. “Sanju is an international quality player, and he fills that role very well,” added Fleming.
“Sometimes you can hang on to theories and philosophies because of past success, but we identified that we need to shift,” he added.
CSK drastically changed from the "Dad's Army" strategy that characterised them a few years ago by spending 60 per cent of their Rs 43.40 crore budget on just two uncapped players.
Although the 44-year-old hasn't made an official retirement announcement, his recent remarks are clearly significant. During the previous IPL season, Dhoni said: "There is no escaping the fact that I am in the late phase of my career."
"I'm not saying I'm done, but I'm also not committing to a return," he said following CSK's most recent game in May 2025, when they finished last for the first time ever. He was retained at INR 4 crores, which is a small modest for the most famous finisher in cricket.
“The writing is on the wall. This is clearly going to be MS Dhoni’s last season,” said Robin Uthappa, a former India wicketkeeper and CSK teammate of MS Dhoni, during the IPL auction.
Three career stages are currently represented in CSK's wicketkeeper matrix: the budding talent (Urvil Patel), the explosive prospect (Kartik Sharma), and the fringe international (Samson). This is architectural planning for the post-Dhoni age, not overbuying.

The team that Dhoni turned into five-time winners is making sure that its character endures the blueprint. The IPL 2026 seems to be the last chapter for cricket's greatest finisher, who is 44 years old, has ongoing knee problems, and is actively establishing a franchise for the future. With MS, it's possible that we have seen the last of him on the field, but you never know.
