Gujarat Titans' captain, Shubman Gill, has been fined 25 percent of his match fees due to a slow over-rate during their Indian Premier League 2024 match against the Chennai Super Kings at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Friday.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and IPL released a statement confirming the penalty, citing it as the team's second offense of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct regarding minimum over-rate violations. Consequently, Gill faced a fine of INR 24 lakh, reflecting the seriousness of the offense.
Additionally, in line with IPL regulations, the other members of the Playing XI, including the Impact Player, were individually fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever was lower.
The BCCI/IPL statement stated, "Due to his team's second offense of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct related to minimum over-rate violations, Gill was fined INR 24 lakh. The rest of the Playing XI members, along with the Impact Player, were each fined either INR 6 lakh or 25 percent of their respective match fees, whichever was lower."
While the disciplinary action against Gill emphasised the importance of adhering to over-rate regulations, the Titans' performance on the field showcased their formidable strength. Gill, along with B Sai Sudharsan, led an extraordinary attack on the Chennai Super Kings' bowling lineup, both scoring centuries.
Their exceptional batting propelled the Gujarat Titans to a commanding 35-run victory over the Chennai Super Kings. Despite the over-rate penalty setback, the Titans' resounding win kept their slim playoff hopes alive.
