Right when it was reported that Ishan Kishan will be added to India's Test squad for the final match against England at The Oval, starting from July 31, an interesting development has emerged. As per a report by Times of India, the wicketkeeper is unfit after sustaining an injury on his ankle. The report mentioned that Ishan met with an accident and has a plaster on his left ankle.
"Ishan has suffered an ankle injury and has ten stitches on his left foot after he fell from a scooty," a source tracking the development was quoted as saying in the report. "Selectors did reach out to Ishan, but only on Thursday. His stitches have been removed and he currently has a plaster on his left ankle."
Ishan was reported to replace Rishabh Pant in the squad, who injured his right toe on the opening day of the Manchester Test. While the impact of the injury is yet to be ascertained it has been reported that he has suffered a fractured toe and has been advised six weeks of rest.
BCCI shared an official update on the same and informed: "despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements." It also stated that Pant "will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper."
Meanwhile, Ishan has played two Tests and his most recent appearance for India was in a T20I encounter against Australia in November 2023.
In the past year, Ishan has experienced a lot of ups and downs. He was infamously removed from the BCCI's Central Contract list in 2024 for not playing domestic cricket as required by the board.
After that, he played domestic cricket for Jharkhand in the 2024–25 season, ultimately recouping his contract in April earlier this year. He has demonstrated strong form playing for Northamptonshire in the County Cricket Division One with scores of 87 and 77.
In the IPL 2025, Ishan played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad, amassing 354 runs from 14 games, including a spectacular century on his maiden outing for the Orange Army.
Even though Ishan hasn't played much Test cricket (78 runs, including a half-century), the left-handed opener has had a significant impact in ODIs and T20Is. Ishan eclipsed Chris Gayle in December 2022 with the fastest-ever double-century in ODIs, 12 deliveries quicker than the 'Universe Boss'. Ishan took just 126 balls to slam a double ton against Bangladesh.
