World Bear Day is observed on the 23rd of March every year across the world. Bear is among the most elusive but the most significant predators of the high mountains. The Himalayan Brown Bears exist in the distant borders of the Himalayas. They are not only rarely found, but some of the largest animals on the land, whose bodies may reach a length of 2.2 metres.

During the World Bear Day, the attention is again drawn to this elusive species of which its existence is becoming very threatened.

What is special about the Himalayan brown bear?

Himalayan brown bear is a sub-species of the Brown Bear modified to endure cold and high-altitude climatic conditions. This polar bear is an endangered species that maintains bulky fur because temperatures drop.

They possess powerful limbs in climbing and digging and a huge body to retain heat. It does not have many spots because it is a solitary and shy animal, which is hardly noticed in spite of its size.

Where are these Bears Found?

The habitat of this bear is the high Himalayan areas such as a section of Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Nepal and Pakistan. It favours the alpine meadow and cold deserts, sometimes up to 3,000 metres above the ground.

Himalayan Brown Bear Diet is not a Luxury!

Himalayan brown bear is omnivorous as opposed to its fierce perception. Its diet is simple and basic. The bears consume grass and roots, insects and little mammals. This adaptable diet affirms its survival in rough environments where there are scanty food resources.

One of the Endangered Species of Bears

The Himalayan brown bear is under the endangered species because of a series of threats that include loss of habitat by human growth, climate changes that influence food supply and human-wildlife conflicts. Its already limited number of inhabitants is still decreasing, which is also a cause of concern among conservationists.

Why World Bear Day matters?

World Bear Day is an annual celebration held on the 23rd of March. There is government awareness about the bear species on this day to the entire world. It also brings out conservation issues and protects the natural habitats. In the case of animals such as the Himalayan brown bear, this kind of awareness determines survival.

India conservation drive on the World Bear day

India has introduced a conservation project named "Project Sloth Bear" in the leadership of PM Narendra Modi. It aims at research based on science, community involvement and mitigating human-bear interaction to make sure that given long term coexistence and conservation of wildlife.

Experts believe such targeted initiatives could play a crucial role in safeguarding India’s diverse bear species. It will also preserve the country’s broader ecological heritage.
