Astronomers are monitoring asteroid 2024 XN1 as it approaches Earth on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2024. Despite its close proximity, experts assure there’s no need for worry, and holiday celebrations will remain unaffected.

How Close Will 2024 XN1 Get?

The 120-foot asteroid will pass Earth at 4,480,000 miles. This distance is over 16 times the Moon's distance. It will travel at 14,743 miles per hour at 02:57 AM IST. Despite its proximity, scientists confirm there is no threat to Earth.

The Importance of Monitoring Asteroids

Asteroids like 2024 XN1 are ancient remnants from the solar system's formation. These space rocks are about 4.6 billion years old. They orbit the Sun and sometimes cross Earth's path. Monitoring them closely is vital for planetary safety. Past asteroid impacts, such as the one that caused the extinction of dinosaurs, highlight the need for caution.

Advanced Tools for Planetary Defence

NASA uses advanced technology to track space rocks. The Jet Propulsion Laboratory, along with radar systems, offers precise tracking. Missions like OSIRIS-REx and Hayabusa2 have gathered crucial samples. These missions help scientists better understand the solar system’s history.

While asteroid 2024 XN1 poses no immediate threat, its flyby reminds us of the importance of planetary defence. Keeping a close watch on near-Earth objects is essential for safeguarding our planet.
