At the base of the sands of the riverbank a great story of survival starts. The river turtles tuck the eggs which have been laid in nests rigorously selected by the females with the hope that someday.

Their civilization will reach the water. However, in most cases, the odds are not in their favor as fewer than half of the hatchlings are likely to have made it to their first year.

Peril on Land and in Water

After the eggs are hatched small turtles have to resort to a frantic race to the river. Predators such as birds and lizards usually prostrate themselves. It is not always enough to get to the water. Within the river, the hunt is still carried on by fish, frogs and bigger turtles.

Reproductive Technique of Nature

The river turtles have developed some remarkable adaptation. The females are able to keep sperm over the months and fertilise eggs, months after mating. This has the advantage that they can nest when the environment conditions are favorable. The chances of their young surviving increase despite the rise in environmental threats.

Threats by Human Hands 

The strength of nature is insignificant in comparison with the human intrusion. Fishing, pollution, destruction of habitats and poaching of turtles of the river have driven several species to extinction. Climate change, altering river temperatures and flooding patterns, adds yet another challenge.

Guardians of the Waterways

Despite many dangers, river turtles remain vital to ecosystems. They help maintain river health and natural ecological balance. Conservationists work tirelessly to protect nesting sites worldwide. Their mission ensures turtles continue their timeless journey downstream.
