NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) is monitoring three asteroids that will fly past Earth on January 9, 2025. Identified as 2024 PT5, 2024 YD13, and 2024 YW9, these space rocks pose no danger to the planet. Their close approach, however, presents significant opportunities for scientific observation.

Asteroid 2024 PT5: Bus-Sized Space Rock

This asteroid, roughly the size of a bus, is about 36 feet wide. It will pass Earth at a safe distance of 1,120,000 miles on January 9, 2025.

Asteroid 2024 YD13: Larger Space Rock

Measuring about 75 feet across, asteroid 2024 YD13 is another bus-sized space rock. It will safely pass Earth at 3,480,000 miles, also on January 9.

Asteroid 2024 YW9: Closest Encounter

Approximately 60 feet wide, this house-sized asteroid will come the closest. It will fly past Earth at a distance of 647,000 miles on the same date.

Monitoring and Research Importance

JPL scientists are closely observing these asteroids to learn more about their characteristics. Though none threaten Earth, their close approaches provide a unique chance to study their movements and compositions. These encounters highlight the importance of continuous monitoring and understanding of celestial objects. By tracking such events, researchers aim to improve planetary defence and deepen knowledge of our solar system.
