Earth will witness three asteroids making close approaches on February 25, highlighting the need for continuous space monitoring. Though none pose a threat, their proximity keeps astronomers alert and data flowing.

2025 DE2: The Swiftest of the Trio

Asteroid 2025 DE2, about 52 feet wide, leads the approach. It will pass Earth at 1,300,000 kilometres, roughly three times the Moon’s distance. The flyby is set for 5:34 AM IST. Travelling at 34,145 km/h, it is the fastest of the three. Despite its safe distance, astronomers remain watchful.

2025 DR1: A Bus-Sized Visitor

Next is asteroid 2025 DR1, about 38 feet long, similar to a bus. It will approach Earth at 2,780,000 kilometres at 4:49 PM IST. This asteroid moves at 22,432 km/h, the slowest among the three. Though smaller, it stays under NASA’s watch due to its NEO status.

2023 RW3: Another House-Sized Object

The final visitor, asteroid 2023 RW3, spans 56 feet. It will pass Earth at 2,850,000 kilometres at 11:47 AM IST. Moving at 18,468 km/h, it’s slower than 2025 DE2 but still of interest. Its size and distance make it worth tracking.

Why Monitoring NEOs Matters

Tracking Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) is key for planetary defence. While these asteroids pose no threat, data from close passes helps refine prediction models. NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) leads these efforts. Tools like radar systems and missions such as OSIRIS-REx aid in studying asteroid paths and compositions.

Such monitoring boosts our understanding of space rocks and strengthens future defence strategies. As these celestial visitors pass safely by, they offer valuable lessons for Earth-bound scientists.
