Study reveals why 60,000 African Penguins starved to death

A new study reveals that over 60,000 African penguins died from starvation between 2004 and 2012 after sardine stocks collapsed near two major South African breeding islands.

A major study has uncovered a shocking marine tragedy recently. More than 60,000 African penguins died from starvation. The die-off occurred between 2004 and 2012 in South Africa. The researchers analysed historic tracking, mortality records, and island surveys.

Two Islands Suffered Severe Losses

The worst declines hit Dassen Island’s breeding colony hard. Robben Island, once a penguin stronghold, also collapsed sharply. Together, both islands lost over 95 percent of penguins. These colonies once hosted tens of thousands of breeding birds.

Sardine Stocks Fell to Critical Levels

Scientists found sardine populations collapsed dramatically during the period. Sardines make up the penguins’ essential and dominant food source. For years, stocks stayed below one-quarter of healthy levels. Penguins struggled to find enough food to survive daily needs.

Annual Moult Made Starvation More Deadly

Penguins undergo a three-week moult each summer. During this time, they cannot hunt for food. They must build heavy fat reserves before moulting begins. With sardines scarce, many birds entered moulting dangerously underweight.

Overfishing and Climate Change

Researchers linked sardine collapse partly to commercial overfishing pressure. Fishing continued even as sardine numbers dropped drastically. Climate change altered ocean temperature and salinity around colonies. These changes reduced sardine reproduction and prey distribution stability.

A Species Now Close to Extinction

The African penguin population has dropped nearly 80 percent. Fewer than 10,000 breeding pairs remain across southern Africa. Scientists warn extinction could occur within one human generation. Strict fishery regulations and preservation of living environments are now badly required.

Wake-Up Call to Save Marine Conservation

The paper brings out the impact of the famine of food on marine predators. The researchers state that the incident is a symptom of bigger ocean ecosystem disturbance. They call on the immediate actions to avoid further disastrous falls.
