India’s space agency ISRO has postponed its maiden satellite docking attempt. Initially planned for January 7, the event is now set for January 9. This mission marks a critical milestone for future space operations, including India’s Bharati Antriksh station.
The mission, known as the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX), involves two satellites—one chaser and one target. These satellites were launched on December 30, and preparations have been ongoing since. ISRO Chairman S. Somanath previously stated that the January 7 date was tentative, depending on perfect conditions.
The SpaDeX Docking scheduled on 7th is now postponed to 9th.The docking process requires further validation through ground simulations based on an abort scenario identified today.Stay tuned for updates.

A Precision-Driven Mission
The docking procedure requires precise alignment and power optimisation. ISRO has been monitoring the satellites using its 18 ground stations and additional international facilities. Officials confirm there are no issues with the satellites or mission timeline.
The final docking will involve a slow, controlled approach. With a speed of 10 millimetres per second, the chaser satellite will latch onto the target satellite. URSC Director M. Sankaran explained that clamps will secure the satellites, forming a single unit.
Demonstrating Critical Capabilities
Once docked, the combined satellites will transfer power from one to the other, testing a heater system. The unit will then be controlled by a single satellite’s system, showcasing the technology needed for space station operations.
This mission lays the groundwork for India's future space ambitions. Successful execution will pave the way for complex endeavours like Chandrayaan-4 and the Bharati Antriksh station. ISRO’s continued advancements highlight its commitment to achieving global space leadership.
