Space Debris may be polluting Earth’s atmosphere, experts warn — ISRO steps up monitoring

ISRO’s Project NETRA aims to track space debris, prevent satellite collisions and protect India’s space assets as concerns grow over Kessler Syndrome and atmospheric pollution from re-entering satellites.

  • No immediate health risk, but long-term effects need study.

Space debris is no longer just an orbital hazard. New research suggests that fragments from defunct satellites including those from mega-constellations such as SpaceX’s Starlink network could be releasing metallic particles into Earth’s upper atmosphere as they burn up during re-entry.

In response to the escalating debris problem, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has intensified monitoring efforts under Project NETRA, India’s dedicated space situational awareness initiative.

A New Risk Beyond Orbital Collisions

For years, scientists have warned about the possibility of Kessler Syndrome. This is a scenario in which collisions between satellites generate cascading debris, making certain orbits unusable.

Now, researchers say there may be an additional layer of concern. When ageing satellites re-enter the atmosphere, they disintegrate under extreme heat.

What Is Project NETRA?

To address the rising threat, ISRO launched Project NETRA (Network for Space Object Tracking and Analysis). Based in Bengaluru, the system uses ground-based radars, optical telescopes and data processing centres.

Its goal is to detect, track and catalogue space objects as small as a few centimetres in low Earth orbit. By predicting potential collisions, Project NETRA helps safeguard Indian satellites and contributes to global debris-monitoring efforts.

How Does ISRO View This Project?

ISRO regards Project NETRA as a critical national capability that enhances both space safety and technological self-reliance. By creating an indigenous monitoring and tracking system, ISRO aims to protect India’s satellites and space assets from increasing debris and collision risk. It will raise India to peer status with established spacefaring nations in space situational awareness.

A Growing Environmental Question

Although no immediate public health risk has been confirmed, experts argue that cumulative effects deserve attention. Space has become an extension of Earth’s environment and what happens in orbit does not stay in orbit.

From collision hazards threatening global communications to possible atmospheric contamination, the consequences are increasingly interconnected.
