A toxic species of hammerhead flatworm is spreading rapidly across Texas. These invasive worms threaten soil health and local ecosystems significantly. They produce a neurotoxin that can irritate humans and pets. Authorities in Texas are urging residents to handle sightings with extreme caution.

Toxic hammerhead worms invade Texas

Species of hammerhead flatworm is spreading rapidly. The worms have been reported across North Texas recently. They are native to Southeast Asia and thrive in heat. Experts warn these worms can damage soil ecosystems significantly.

What is a Hammerhead worm?

The worms can grow up to around 40 centimetres long. They have a distinctive hammer-shaped head and dark body. Some species produce a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin in mucus. This toxin can irritate human skin or pet mucous membranes.

Hammerhead worm prey on earthworms and small garden snails regularly. The earthworms are crucial for maintaining healthy and fertile soil.

Worm populations can decline quickly in areas with flatworm invasion. The expansion of worms threatens gardens, crops and natural ecosystems severely.

Why is Texas affected by these worms?

Heavy rains and humid conditions help the worms thrive locally. Climate change may be creating more suitable environments for spread. There are few natural predators to control their population effectively. The invasive worms reproduce rapidly when conditions are favourable for them.

Safety and control measures

Experts advise never touching worms directly with bare hands ever. Squashing or cutting worms can cause regeneration into multiple worms. Safe removal involves bagging worms, freezing for 48 hours. Report sightings to local invasive species authorities for proper action.
