A splash of purple and white surprised park rangers in Thailand’s Kaeng Krachan National Park. They recently photographed unusual crabs with vivid shells and pale markings, sparking excitement among conservationists.

What did rangers find at Kaeng Krachan?
According to Thailand’s Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, the unusual crabs were seen near the Panoen Thung checkpoint. The sighting happened just before the park closed at the end of the tourist season. Rangers described the discovery as “a precious gift from nature.” The carapace of the crabs, or back shell, grows to about one inch when mature.

The crabs are formally named in honour of Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. However, they are more commonly known as panda crabs. Their scientific name is Lepidothelphusa cognetti. Panda crabs are semi-terrestrial species that usually show black-and-white patterns, resembling a panda. They were first discovered in 1986 at Ngao Waterfall National Park, although some reports suggest earlier sightings.

Are purple panda crabs common in Thailand?
No, the purple variety is extremely rare. Pictures shared online highlight their alien-like appearance, making them different from the usual black-and-white crabs. Earlier this month, the park also celebrated spotting a specimen of the traditional panda crab. The department said such appearances show the forest still has excellent environmental quality.

Kaeng Krachan is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its biodiversity. The park is home to leopards, bears, broadbill birds, and king cobras. Officials say the presence of panda crabs indicates a healthy ecosystem. They also remind the public of the need to protect the forest. “The appearance of the royal crab serves as a reminder of the value of our world heritage forest,” the department added.
