Scientists found a new kind of previously unknown genus of jumping spiders in New Zealand's mountains. It shows there is still a lot to discover about these spiders. Under this genus, 12 new species of spiders were identified, marking an incredible find by biologists.

Jumping Spider Freaks Out Biologists

Back in 2024, some biologists in New Zealand stumbled upon a whole new group of jumping spiders. They are calling them Ourea, and they found 12 types of them. These new species were unidentified.  They were up in the mountains of the South Island. The study was published in the New Zealand Journal of Zoology.

Super Good at Hiding

These Ourea spiders are amazing at hiding. They look just like the rocks around them. Their hairs are white, brown and black, so one can barely see them unless they move. They can jump 50 times their length. This jumping tactic of theirs help them get away from danger. Jumping spiders made it hard for the scientists to grab them.

Mountain Spiders Only

Ten of the 12 types only live way up high, but a couple hang out closer to the trees. Scientists named the whole group Ourea, after the old Greek mountain gods. Before this, people only knew about 50 of the 200 or so jumping spiders in New Zealand.

What is next for Ourea?

The biologists are going to check out some other mountain ranges to see if they can find even more spiders. They want to understand how these little guys make it in such a crazy place. The research proves that New Zealand is full of life and that there could be way more spiders hidden in those mountains. The experts need to keep checking them out and protect where they live.
