Sky watchers are keeping their eyes on the cosmos again. A small but noticeable visitor from space is heading our way this week. Thankfully, there is no danger, but it’s still worth a close watch.
Asteroid 2025 MV89 to Pass Earth Safely
NASA has confirmed asteroid 2025 MV89 is approaching Earth. The space rock measures about 120 feet in diameter. That’s roughly the size of a small passenger plane.
It will make its closest approach on 4 July. The asteroid will pass at a safe distance of 1.22 million kilometres. It is travelling at a speed of 19,441 miles per hour.
While that sounds far, it’s fairly close in space terms. The asteroid belongs to the Aten group, whose orbits often cross Earth’s path.
NASA assures there is no danger from this flyby. An asteroid must be over 150 metres wide and within 7.4 million kilometres to be considered hazardous. 2025 MV89 meets neither condition.
Still, experts are closely tracking it for any orbital changes. Even the smallest shift could change its future path around Earth.
ISRO Looks Towards Planetary Defence
While 2025 MV89 poses no threat, agencies remain alert. ISRO is already thinking ahead to future space challenges.
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has stressed the need for planetary defence. He said ISRO is preparing to monitor larger asteroids like Apophis. The asteroid Apophis will make a close approach in 2029.
Somanath also spoke about joining hands with NASA, ESA, and JAXA. Together, they aim to build stronger systems for asteroid detection and protection.
He believes that an asteroid impact could be disastrous. ISRO plans to develop missions that land on asteroids. These missions will study potential risks and explore ways to defend Earth.
A Cosmic Reminder to Stay Prepared
Though 2025 MV89 will glide by without harm, it serves as a reminder. Our skies need constant watching. Space is vast, but sometimes it comes uncomfortably close.
