NASA tracks a massive 44-foot asteroid set to pass very close to Earth today

Watching the night sky can feel peaceful and predictable. Yet, sometimes space throws in a reminder that Earth is never truly alone. A house-sized asteroid named 2025 TC is now on course for a close approach, catching the attention of astronomers around the world.

How close will asteroid 2025 TC pass Earth?
NASA has confirmed that asteroid 2025 TC, about 44 feet wide, will make a near pass by our planet on 3 October. The rock is travelling at a speed of around 36,128 miles per hour. Its closest distance will be roughly 53,300 miles from Earth, which may seem far but is considered close in astronomical terms.

Should we be worried about its approach?
Experts say there is no reason for concern. The asteroid belongs to the Aten group, a family of space rocks that frequently cross Earth’s orbit. NASA only labels objects as hazardous if they are larger than 85 metres and come within 7.4 million kilometres of Earth. Asteroid 2025 TC meets neither of those criteria, so it poses no threat.

Why are scientists still watching it?
Even when asteroids are harmless, scientists keep a close watch. A small change in orbit can alter their trajectory significantly. Continuous monitoring helps researchers understand their paths and prepare for potential future risks. That is why agencies worldwide track such objects with precision.

What are future plans for asteroid research?
ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has shared plans to expand India’s asteroid research. The agency hopes to study larger objects like Apophis, expected to pass near Earth in 2029. Collaboration with NASA, ESA and JAXA is also on the agenda, with future missions aiming to land on asteroids and analyse their composition.
