Astronaut Nicole Ayers witnessed a rare sight from space. While circling Earth aboard the International Space Station in early July, she observed a gigantic jet lightning event. The jet appeared as bright red, white, and blue streaks.

What Is Gigantic Jet Lightning?

Gigantic jets are a rare form of lightning. They rise from thunderstorms and reach Earth's ionosphere. Scientists have known about them for only 25 years. Their formation and link to other atmospheric phenomena remain unclear. Researchers continue studying these jets to understand their origin.

The jet appeared near the centre of a striking image. Below, Earth’s thin atmosphere glowed faint green. City lights peeked through the cloud cover. Distant stars twinkled in the black night sky above.

Why Are Scientists Interested in Gigantic Jets?

These jets are part of Transient Luminous Events or TLEs. TLEs include blue jets and red sprites. Their interactions and differences are active research subjects. Understanding these events could improve knowledge of Earth’s atmosphere.
