NASA’s Osiris-Apex spacecraft offered a fresh homeward look while racing past Earth. The sight came as the craft prepared for a long journey towards the asteroid Apophis. The moment added a personal note to a demanding deep-space mission.
Why did the spacecraft pass Earth at such a height?
The probe flew 3,438 kilometres above Earth during its swing. It moved closer than several high-orbit satellites circling the planet. The pass placed it roughly 2,100 miles above Earth’s surface. This distance is near half the upper level of low Earth orbit. The flyby adjusted the craft’s speed for looping solar paths. These paths set up its planned arrival at Apophis.
What did Osiris-Apex capture during the quick approach?
The spacecraft turned its cameras back towards Earth while approaching. A new video comes from 424 frames taken by StowCam. The view shows the Atlantic turning smoothly beneath the craft. South America appears clearly on the far left side. The instrument deck sits strongly in the frame’s foreground. The pass also helped engineers refine several science systems.
Hope you didn't blink! On Sept. 23, @NASA's OSIRIS-APEX spacecraft made a quick flyby, passing 2,136 miles above Earth. Along the way, OSIRIS-APEX turned to look home. https://t.co/wexOWQZ8h0pic.twitter.com/vs3s1LrIxt— NASA Solar System (@NASASolarSystem) November 25, 2025
How does this mission connect with Osiris-Rex earlier?
Osiris-Apex continues work first begun by Osiris-Rex. Osiris-Rex returned Bennu samples safely to Earth in 2023. The new mission will track changes on Apophis during 2029. Researchers expect shifts in the body’s spin after its close Earth pass. The craft will observe surface variations caused by tidal forces. These studies may reveal fresh clues about asteroid evolution.
What new purpose does StowCam now serve onboard?
StowCam earlier confirmed the sealing of Bennu samples. It acted as a steady engineering camera for the mission. With the capsule gone, the camera now shows clear hardware views. It displays the full deck, including Canada’s laser altimeter system. The system mapped Bennu in accurate 3D during earlier studies. It will help guide detailed imaging when Apophis arrives.
