NASA has issued an alert about two massive asteroids set to make close approaches to Earth on Friday, August 8, 2025. While there’s no immediate threat, the sheer size and timing of these space rocks have triggered widespread curiosity.
The first asteroid, officially named (2025 OJ1), is estimated to be around 300 feet wide, roughly the height of a 30-story building. According to NASA's Near-Earth Object (NEO) tracking system, it will pass by Earth at a distance of approximately 3.2 million miles. Though that may sound far, in cosmic terms, it’s considered a “close approach.”
The second asteroid, (2019 CO1), is no less intimidating. About 200 feet in size—comparable to a large commercial airplane—it will zoom past Earth at a distance of 4.24 million miles on the same day. Both objects are traveling at incredibly high speeds, and while they pose no danger to life on Earth, they serve as powerful reminders of how many large space rocks exist in our celestial neighborhood.
NASA has assured the public that there is no risk of collision from either asteroid.
NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office continues to monitor thousands of near-Earth objects, using advanced telescopes and tracking systems.
