NASA clears path for Sunita Williams' return from space: Starliner Engine Test Successful

In a crucial step towards the safe return of astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore to Earth, NASA and Boeing have successfully completed a hot fire test of the Starliner spacecraft. The test, conducted while the spacecraft was docked at the International Space Station (ISS), evaluated the performance of the spacecraft's thrusters and helium systems.

During the test, 27 of the spacecraft's 28 jets were fired in short bursts, and preliminary results indicate that all tested thrusters performed at preflight levels. The test also assessed the helium supply and leak rates, with the helium system remaining stable throughout.

The successful hot fire test marks a significant milestone in preparing the Starliner spacecraft for its return journey to Earth. NASA and Boeing teams are currently reviewing data from the test and recent ground testing to inform the agency's return readiness review.

With the primary focus on bringing Wilmore and Williams home safely, the results of the recent tests will play a crucial role in determining the exact timing of their return. Potential undocking dates are available throughout August, and a target return date will be set after the return readiness review.
