For months, astronauts Butch Wilmore and Sunita Williams remained aboard the International Space Station, waiting for their return. While politics had been dismissed as a reason for the delay, Wilmore recently acknowledged Elon Musk’s claim that the White House rejected a SpaceX rescue mission.
Wilmore Acknowledges Musk’s Statement
During an in-orbit press conference, Wilmore addressed Musk’s allegations. The SpaceX CEO had claimed that President Joe Biden’s administration refused his offer to bring the astronauts home. When asked about this, Wilmore responded cautiously.
“I can only say that Mr. Musk, what he says, is absolutely factual,” he said. However, he admitted that he and Williams had no knowledge of the discussions behind the scenes. “We have no information on what was offered or to whom,” Wilmore added.
Wilmore Expresses Support for Trump and Musk
Wilmore also voiced admiration for both Musk and former President Donald Trump. “We respect Mr. Musk and President Trump. We appreciate all they do for spaceflight and our nation,” he said.
Meanwhile, Musk recently suggested on X that the ISS should be decommissioned soon, urging a focus on Mars missions. Williams disagreed, highlighting the station’s ongoing contributions to science. “This place is ticking. It’s really amazing,” she said.
The astronauts are now set to return home on a SpaceX Crew Dragon, ending a mission that has sparked debate over politics, safety, and the future of human spaceflight.
