An Indian Army dog named Tyson was injured during a counter-terror operation in Kishtwar district, where security forces killed three Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives after locating a concealed hideout.
The operation unfolded in Chhatroo area. It lies within Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district. Tyson serves with the Army’s 2 Para. He is a trained German Shepherd. Troops launched a joint search mission there. The mission formed part of Operation Trashi-I. It began earlier in January this year.
Counter-Terror Operation in Kishtwar
Security forces moved through dense forest terrain. The hideout lay dug into steep slopes. Tyson was sent ahead to investigate. His task involved probing suspected militant shelters. As he neared the concealed entrance, gunfire erupted suddenly. Militants opened fire directly at the dog.
Tyson was struck in his front leg. Despite injury, he continued advancing forward. His movement confirmed militant presence clearly. Troops quickly identified the exact hideout location. Security forces then engaged the militants. Three Jaish-e-Mohammed operatives were killed.
Officials said one slain militant was Saifullah. He had operated locally for nearly 2 years. He had repeatedly escaped earlier security operations. Forces recovered two AK-47 rifles there. Ammunition and other materials were also seized.

The joint operation involved several agencies. These included the Indian Army and police. The Central Reserve Police Force participated. Special forces units supported the mission.
Brave K9 Tyson Shows Exceptional Courage
An official described Tyson’s actions later. “Brave K9 trooper Tyson was injured,” he said. He confirmed the bullet struck Tyson’s leg. “Despite being shot, Tyson continued advancing,” the official added.
Tyson was first to reach the door. Terrorists were hiding behind that entrance. His actions provided crucial operational advantage. Officials said his detection proved decisive.
The injured dog was evacuated swiftly. He was airlifted for immediate treatment. Doctors treated him at Command Hospital, Udhampur. Officials confirmed he remains in stable condition.
Operation Trashi-I and Ongoing Efforts
Operation Trashi-I targets remote forested zones. It covers Chhatroo, Sonnar, Dolgam and Dichhar. Forces conduct sustained search and assault missions. Militants often shift locations frequently there.
Locals expressed relief after the encounter. Officials noted trained Army dogs remain vital. In October 2024, another dog died. Phantom, a Belgian Malinois, was killed. He shielded soldiers during a gunfight.
Army dogs detect explosives and threats. Their training supports soldiers in danger. Tyson’s actions reflected unwavering loyalty. Officials described him as a true soldier.
