On January 20, 2025, Janet Petro was appointed acting NASA administrator by US President Donald Trump. This follows her leadership at the Kennedy Space Center. Petro’s appointment marks a new era for NASA, bringing fresh perspectives to the agency’s missions.
A Historic Appointment
Petro is the first woman to lead NASA since its founding in 1958. She takes over from Bill Nelson, the 14th NASA administrator. In her new role, she is responsible for guiding NASA’s budget and programmes until a permanent administrator is confirmed.
“I am honoured to lead NASA during this time,” said Petro. “NASA will align with the new administration’s policies while staying true to our mission and values,” she added.
