A remarkable new snake species has been discovered in India’s Nicobar Islands. The researchers have named it Lycodon irwini, honouring wildlife expert Steve Irwin. This discovery highlights both biodiversity richness and the importance of conservation.

A Distinctive Wolf Snake Emerges

Lycodon irwini is a sleek, glossy-black wolf snake species. It has a slender body and a long tapering tail. Adults can reach lengths of approximately 1.2 metres maximum. The species appears non-venomous, feeding primarily on smaller reptiles.

Endemic to Great Nicobar Island

Scientists found the snake exclusively on Great Nicobar Island in India. Only a few specimens have been recorded in recent field surveys. Its limited distribution makes it vulnerable to habitat loss pressures.

Scientific Identification and Analysis

Researchers compared old museum specimens with newly collected individuals carefully. They examined scale counts and body structure for precise differentiation. Genetic analysis showed 6–17% divergence from other Lycodon wolf snakes. The differences were sufficient to classify it as a new species.

Honouring Steve Irwin’s Legacy

The species name recognises Steve Irwin’s contributions to wildlife conservation. His global passion for animals inspired both scientists and naturalists. The naming highlights public awareness for exotic species discoveries worldwide.

Conservation Implications and Significance

Scientists recommend classifying Lycodon irwini as endangered due to rarity. Its discovery underscores the importance of surveying remote, underexplored regions. The Nicobar Islands continue to reveal new species previously unknown globally.

This discovery combines scientific rigour with public engagement and conservation awareness. It reinforces the urgency to protect fragile ecosystems and biodiversity today.
