The spikes act like microscopic “drain snakes,” gathering hair. This makes hairballs easier to expel from the stomach.

The findings suggest cats use grass for mechanical purposes. It is not primarily for nutrients or parasite removal. The tiny spikes are too small to catch intestinal parasites.
