ISS gained an amazing night-time shot of India with city lights. This photo was captured when the space station flew over the Arabian Sea giving a panoramic view of the Indian subcontinent all the way to the dramatic Himalayas.
In the picture, one can clearly see the arrangement of brightened city hubs linked as road webs and villages by radiant lights. The photo shows the manner in which humanity has changed the scenery into a maze of light that can be spotted even by a satellite.
The Himalayas to the Arabian Sea
The photograph was captured when the space station was travelling on the Arabian Sea on its way to northern India. This orbit offered a wide geographical viewpoint.
The dark waters in the southern end of the picture contrast with the lights of the coastal cities. To the north the light plains are slowly overcome by the darker landscape of the mountainous parts.

How the International Space Station Captures Night Images?
Astronauts aboard the International Space Station use specialised digital cameras equipped with long-exposure settings to photograph Earth at night.
The station travels around the planet at roughly 28,000 kilometres per hour, it keeps on capturing clear images of Earth. Astronauts often use high-sensitivity lenses and adjust exposure times so that city lights appear sharp.
Where Did the Lights Glow Most in the Image?
In the image, the brightest clusters of light appear across major urban centres and densely populated regions of India. Large metropolitan areas shine intensely, forming concentrated patches of illumination. The shinning patterns are more so evident in the north and western plains.
The light interconnected systems in the cities were formed by the highways and industrial corridors. The coastal areas of the Arabian Sea are also notable because of hectic ports and major cities situated at the coast.
Why Astronauts Capture Night Images?
The images taken by astronaut from the International Space Station are used to monitor urban growth, energy use and environmental changes of Earth.
Nighttime satellite and orbital photography can help researchers track how cities expand over time. It also allows scientists to analyse patterns of electricity consumption and the impact of artificial lighting on ecosystems.
