Firefly Aerospace has achieved a historic milestone with its Blue Ghost lander. The spacecraft made a successful landing on the Moon on 2 March 2025. This marks the second time a private company has completed such a mission.
Successful Landing in Mare Crisium
Blue Ghost landed in Mare Crisium, also called the “Sea of Crises.” The region is a vast lunar plain known for its unique terrain. The mission is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme. It aims to boost private-sector involvement in lunar exploration.
Firefly released a nearly three-minute video of the landing. The footage captures the lander’s descent and dust clouds from its thrusters. “After identifying surface hazards, Blue Ghost landed on target,” Firefly announced. The company celebrated the event with the phrase, “We have moon dust on our boots!”.

Mission Objectives and Future Plans
Launched on 15 January atop a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket, Blue Ghost carries ten NASA instruments. These tools will study lunar heat flow and surface interactions. Shortly after landing, some instruments began collecting data.
NASA’s acting Administrator Janet Petro praised the achievement. “This success shows how NASA and U.S. companies lead space exploration,” she stated.
Blue Ghost’s 14-day mission will provide valuable lunar insights. The data will support NASA’s Artemis programme, which aims for long-term Moon exploration.
Meanwhile, NASA is preparing for its next lunar landing. The Athena lander is set to touch down near the Moon’s south pole on 6 March.
