Scientists are closely monitoring Asteroid 2010 RA91 as it approaches Earth, drawing attention for its size and proximity during a scheduled flyby on 21 March. Space agencies, including NASA, have confirmed that the object will pass safely without posing any threat to the planet.
Asteroid 2010 RA91 flyby and distance from Earth
The asteroid measures around 210 feet in width. It travels at a speed exceeding 22,000 miles hourly. At its closest point, it remains over one million miles away. Scientists describe this distance as relatively close in space terms. The object belongs to the Aten asteroid group classification. These asteroids are known to cross Earth’s orbital path frequently. Such characteristics make them important for regular scientific observation. Despite its approach, experts confirm no risk to Earth currently.
Why scientists say asteroid poses no danger
According to NASA, specific criteria define potentially hazardous asteroids. Objects must come within 7.4 million kilometres to qualify. They must also exceed about 85 metres in diameter. This asteroid does not meet either of those conditions. Experts emphasise that it will pass safely without incident. However, scientists continue monitoring due to orbital uncertainties. Even small gravitational influences can alter asteroid trajectories over time. Continuous tracking ensures preparedness for any future risks.
Global plans to study asteroids and future missions
India’s space programme is also focusing on asteroid research efforts. Indian Space Research Organisation has outlined future plans for detailed study. Former chairman S Somanath shared strategies for upcoming missions. These include studying large asteroids such as Apophis. Apophis is expected to pass Earth closely in 2029. India aims to collaborate with NASA and other global agencies. Partners include European Space Agency and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency. Future missions may involve landing spacecraft on asteroid surfaces. The goal is to understand their structure and composition better.
The flyby highlights the importance of constant space observation. Scientists stress that monitoring helps prevent unexpected future threats.
