An ancient mud volcano has been discovered 400 metres deep in the Barents Sea. Scientists believe it could be a refuge for vulnerable Arctic marine species.
The Borealis Mud Volcano was spotted during a 2023 expedition by UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. Researchers used a remotely operated vehicle from REV Ocean to examine the site closely.
A unique marine habitat
Professor Giuliana Panieri from UiT called the discovery “exceptional.” She noted that, while volcanoes seem inhospitable, this one provides habitat, shelter, and food for marine life, BBC reported.
The volcano's crusts create a stable environment, supporting diverse species. Its heat warms the seabed to 11.5°C, compared to the usual 4°C. This temperature difference makes it a distinct ecosystem.
Future research ahead
Scientists plan to study the Borealis Mud Volcano further. They aim to understand how its unique conditions support Arctic biodiversity. This discovery highlights the hidden complexity of deep-sea environments.
