When is Choti Holi? Check Exact Date, Time, Rituals and more

Choti Holi, also known as Holika Dahan or Holika Deepak, is an important Hindu festival that marks the victory of good over evil. In 2025, Holika Dahan falls on Thursday, March 13. This ritual is performed on the night before Rangwali Holi and holds deep spiritual significance.

According to Hindu scriptures, Holika Dahan should be performed during Pradosh Kaal (the period just after sunset) while Purnimasi Tithi (full moon) is prevailing. However, one crucial factor to consider is Bhadra, an inauspicious time during which no good work should be undertaken.

The Muhurta (auspicious timing) for Holika Dahan is determined by these rules:

  • First Preference: Holika Dahan should be done during Pradosh Kaal, after Bhadra ends.
  • If Bhadra overlaps Pradosh: The ritual should be performed after Bhadra is over, as long as it is before midnight.
  • If Bhadra extends past midnight: Holika Dahan may be performed during Bhadra Punchha (the last phase of Bhadra), but Bhadra Mukha must be strictly avoided. Performing Holika Dahan during Bhadra Mukha is believed to bring misfortune to individuals, cities, and even the entire nation.

Unlike other Hindu festivals, where performing rituals at the wrong time may only reduce their benefits, conducting Holika Dahan at an incorrect Muhurta can bring negative consequences and hardships. Hence, selecting the right time is of utmost importance.

Choti Holi: Spiritual Significance

Holika Dahan symbolizes the burning away of negativity, ego, and evil forces. It is associated with the legend of Prahlad and Holika, where Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu saved him, while his wicked aunt Holika was destroyed in the fire. Devotees gather around the sacred fire, offer prayers, and seek protection from evil forces for the year ahead.

By observing Holika Dahan at the right Muhurta, devotees can ensure a prosperous and blessed year ahead.
