Chinese New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is one of the most important celebrations in China and among East Asian communities worldwide. It is a time of joy, family reunions, and cultural festivities that span several days, bringing together traditions that have been passed down for centuries.

Chinese New Year 2025: Key Dates

In 2025, Chinese New Year begins on Wednesday, January 29, and celebrations will continue for 15 days, concluding with the Lantern Festival on Wednesday, February 12. Public holidays in China for the New Year will be observed from January 28 to February 4, offering ample time for families and communities to come together to mark the beginning of the lunar year.

Chinese New Year 2025: Animal of the year

Each Chinese New Year is associated with one of the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. For 2025, it is the Year of the Snake, the sixth animal in the zodiac cycle.

The Snake is a symbol of wisdom, elegance, and intuition. People born in the Year of the Snake are often seen as resourceful, self-reliant, and capable of overcoming challenges with determination. This year is expected to bring a focus on careful planning and strategic thinking, as these are traits linked to the Snake’s personality.

Chinese New Year: Significance

The origins of Chinese New Year are deeply rooted in folklore. According to legend, a sea monster named Nian would emerge from the waters on New Year’s Eve, wreaking havoc on villages. To protect themselves, villagers discovered that Nian was afraid of loud noises and the color red. They began lighting firecrackers, displaying red decorations, and wearing red clothing to ward off the beast.

This tradition of using red and loud celebrations has endured through the centuries and is a hallmark of Chinese New Year today.

Worldwide Celebrations and Traditions

Chinese New Year is a time of vibrant celebrations and meaningful customs. Here are some of the most notable traditions:

  • Family Reunions: Families gather for reunion dinners, featuring special dishes like dumplings, rice cakes, and fish, symbolising prosperity and abundance.
  • Lion and Dragon Dances: These energetic performances are believed to bring good fortune and drive away evil spirits.
  • Red Envelopes: Known as hongbao, red envelopes filled with money are gifted to children and young adults to symbolise good luck and blessings.
  • Lantern Festival: The 15-day celebration concludes with the Lantern Festival, where streets come alive with glowing lanterns, symbolising hope and unity.

Although rooted in Chinese culture, Chinese New Year has become a global event, celebrated in countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, and even in major cities worldwide, such as New York, London, and Sydney. Events include parades, fireworks, and cultural showcases, uniting communities in festive spirit.

Chinese New Year 2025 is set to bring joy and excitement as people welcome the Year of the Snake. With its rich traditions, mythical origins, and global celebrations, it continues to be a festival that inspires connection, prosperity, and hope for the year ahead.
