Most festivals in the Amanta and Purnimanta lunar calendars occur on the same day. The Purnimanta calendar is predominantly followed in the North Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, Punjab, and Haryana. In contrast, the Amanta lunar calendar is usually observed in the other states.

However, Vat Savitri Vrat is an exception. In the Purnimanta calendar, it is celebrated during Jyeshtha Amavasya, coinciding with Shani Jayanti. In the Amanta calendar, it is known as Vat Purnima Vrat and is celebrated during Jyeshtha Purnima.

As a result, married women in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and the southern states of India observe Vat Savitri Vrat 15 days later than their North Indian counterparts. Nonetheless, the legend inspiring the fast remains the same across both calendars.

The legend recounts how the venerable Savitri outwitted Lord Yama, the god of death, and forced him to restore her husband Satyawan's life. Consequently, married women undertake the Vat Savitri Vrat for the well-being and longevity of their husbands.

Significance

On this sacred day, women undertake a rigorous fast and offer prayers to the Banyan Tree. As per Hindu scriptures, the Banyan Tree is held in high esteem, believed to be the abode of the Trinity Gods—Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Brahma. The tale of Savitri and Satyavan is narrated during this fast. Notably, Vat Savitri Vrat has two variants: one observed on Amavasya Tithi (new moon day) and the other on Purnima Tithi (full moon day). Women in North India observe the fast on Amavasya Tithi, whereas in Maharashtra, it is marked on Purnima Tithi.
