Tungnath Temple is one of the most revered Shiva temples in India and holds the distinction of being the highest among the Panch Kedar temples. Nestled in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, it is perched at an elevation of 3,690 metres (12,106 feet), just below Chandrashila Peak. The temple is surrounded by the Mandakini and Alaknanda River valleys and is steeped in rich mythology, closely linked to the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata.

Tungnath Temple Significance

Tungnath, meaning "Lord of the Peaks," is an essential pilgrimage site for Lord Shiva devotees. It is believed that Lord Rama meditated at Chandrashila Peak, which is near Tungnath, while Ravana is said to have performed penance here to please Lord Shiva. As part of the sacred Panch Kedar pilgrimage, Tungnath stands out not only for its religious significance but also for its breathtaking natural beauty.

Tungnath Trekking Guide

The treks to Tungnath are relatively short compared to other Panch Kedar temples, but it is a steep ascent. The trek begins from Chopta, a picturesque hill station at an altitude of 2,926 metres (9,600 feet), covering a distance of 5 km (3.1 miles). The trek can take 4-5 hours depending on physical fitness. The trail is well-paved with stone pathways and offers mesmerizing views of the Himalayas, diverse flora, and rich wildlife.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (258 km away).
  • By Rail: The closest railway station is Rishikesh, located 241 km from the temple.
  • By Road: Chopta is well-connected by road via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, and Rudraprayag. From Chopta, a 3 km trek leads to the temple.
