Papmochani Ekadashi is observed during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase of the moon) of the Chaitra month according to the North Indian Purnimanta calendar. In the South Indian Amanta calendar, it falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Phalguna month. Despite the difference in calendar interpretations, both regions observe this sacred day on the same date.
Parana: The Ritual of Breaking the Fast
Parana refers to the act of breaking the fast, which is done on the day following Ekadashi. It is essential to complete Parana during the Dwadashi Tithi (the twelfth lunar day) unless the Dwadashi Tithi ends before sunrise. Skipping Parana during the Dwadashi is considered an offence.
It is crucial not to break the fast during Hari Vasara, the first quarter of Dwadashi Tithi. The recommended time to end the fast is Pratahkal (early morning). If this is not possible, one should wait until after Madhyahna (midday) to complete the fast.
Rules for Fasting on Ekadashi
In certain years, Ekadashi fasting may be suggested on two consecutive days. Typically, householders (Smartha) observe the fast on the first day. The second day is reserved for Sanyasis, widows, and those seeking Moksha (liberation). When the alternate Ekadashi fast aligns with the Vaishnava Ekadashi, staunch devotees often observe the fast on both days to seek Lord Vishnu’s blessings.
Papmochani Ekadashi: Significance
Papmochani Ekadashi is believed to absolve devotees of their sins and cleanse their souls. Observing this fast with dedication and devotion is said to help in attaining spiritual growth and seeking forgiveness for past mistakes.
This sacred day, observed before the onset of Chaitra Navratri, holds immense value in the spiritual calendar, providing a chance for reflection, discipline, and devotion to Lord Vishnu.
