Parana, which means breaking the fast, is an important ritual associated with Ekadashi. The fast is traditionally broken the following day, during Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise. It is essential to complete the Parana within this Tithi, as missing this window is considered an offence. If Dwadashi ends before sunrise, Parana must be done before that time.

However, Parana should not be performed during Hari Vasara, the initial quarter of Dwadashi Tithi. It is advised to wait for this period to pass and then break the fast. The most auspicious time to perform Parana is during Pratahkal (early morning). If breaking the fast-during Pratahkal is not feasible, it can be done after Madhyahna (midday).

Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat 2024: Fasting on Consecutive Days

Occasionally, Ekadashi fasting is recommended on two consecutive days, which can sometimes confuse devotees. The first day of fasting is primarily observed by Smartha devotees, those who follow family traditions. The second day, also known as the alternate Ekadashi, is reserved for Sanyasis (renunciants), widows, and those seeking Moksha (liberation). This second fasting day often coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi, a special day for followers of Lord Vishnu.

For those deeply devoted to Lord Vishnu, fasting on both days is considered a display of devotion and a path to receive his blessings.

Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat 2024: Rituals

Fasting on Papankusha Ekadashi involves abstaining from grains, pulses, and heavy food. Devotees usually consume simple foods like fruits, nuts, and milk. Along with fasting, they engage in prayers, chant Vishnu mantras, and spend time meditating on the Lord’s name. Performing charitable deeds and donating to the poor is also considered auspicious, as it pleases Lord Vishnu and brings divine blessings.

This day is not only a physical cleanse but also a spiritual journey that helps devotees reflect on their lives, letting go of material distractions to focus on spiritual growth.

Papankusha Ekadashi Vrat 2024: Significance

Papankusha Ekadashi is a day dedicated to seeking divine blessings and forgiveness for past misdeeds. Observing this fast with devotion and adhering to the prescribed rituals brings peace, spiritual merit, and a sense of purity. Whether observing the fast on one day or both, the spiritual significance of Papankusha Ekadashi offers devotees a path towards Moksha and a deeper connection with Lord Vishnu.
