Nirjala Ekadashi 2024 Date: Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 18, 2024.
Nirjala Ekadashi will be celebrated on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, is one of the most significant Ekadashis celebrated by Hindus. The term 'Nirjala' translates to 'without water' in Sanskrit.
On this day, devotees undertake a strict fast, refraining from consuming both food and water, making it the most challenging of all Ekadashi fasts. Nirjala Ekadashi falls just after Ganga Dussehra but in some years Ganga Dussehra and Nirjala Ekadashi might fall on the same day.

Nirjala Ekadashi, also known as
Pandava Ekadashi or
Bhimseni Ekadashi, is associated with a legend involving
Bhimsen, the
second Pandava brother.
Bhimsen, known for his appetite, could not resist food and failed to observe the
Ekadashi fast. Unlike
Bhima, the other
Pandavas and
Draupadi faithfully observed the fast. Distressed by his lack of resolve and disrespect towards
Lord Vishnu,
Bhima sought guidance from
Maharishi Vyasa. Vyasa suggested that
Bhima observe a single
Nirjala Ekadasi fast to make up for not fasting on all
Ekadashis throughout the year. This story is the reason behind the alternative names for
Nirjala Ekadashi.
Benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi Vratam
Observing Nirjala Ekadashi is deemed as equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashis within a year. It is held that the merits accrued from this vrat are immense. Here are some benefits associated with observing this vratam in 2024:
- In contrast to other Ekadashis that permit partial fasting, Nirjala Ekadashi demands complete abstinence from food and water throughout the day. It is believed that this rigorous fast purifies both the body and the mind.
- Fasting on this day is thought to purify the soul, erase sins, and facilitate spiritual development. Devotees seek the blessings of Lord Vishnu for liberation (moksha).
- Although the physical challenge of waterless fasting may appear intimidating, it can offer health benefits. It aids in detoxifying the body, enhancing digestion, and strengthening the immune system.
- Observance of Nirjala Ekadashi demands intense devotion and self-discipline, instilling patience, mastery over desires, and surrender to the divine.
