Choti Diwali 2024: Know The Story of Narak Chaturdashi

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Significance of Abhyang Snan

The five-day Diwali celebration begins with Dhantrayodashi and concludes with Bhaiya Dooj. Among these days, Abhyang Snan is traditionally recommended on Chaturdashi, Amavasya, and Pratipada. However, the Abhyang Snan performed on Narak Chaturdashi is the most significant. It is believed that those who partake in this ritual can avoid the torments of Narak (hell).

For this ritual, til (sesame) oil is used for the Ubtan, a traditional herbal paste applied to the body before bathing. The significance of the Abhyang Snan on this day is linked to the belief in purification and the expulsion of negativity.

Narak Chaturdashi 2024: Timing of Abhyang Snan

Abhyang Snan is performed during a specific time frame, known as the Muhurta. The ideal window for this ritual occurs between moonrise and sunrise, while the Chaturdashi Tithi is prevailing. This ensures that devotees adhere to the auspicious timings prescribed in religious texts.

The unique aspect of Narak Chaturdashi is that the Chaturdashi Tithi may extend to the day of Lakshmi Puja, depending on the lunar calendar. If Chaturdashi Tithi prevails before sunrise and Amavasya Tithi takes over after sunset, both events coincide on the same day. Therefore, the Abhyang Snan should be performed before sunrise on Narak Chaturdashi.

In conclusion, Narak Chaturdashi and the associated Abhyang Snan rituals play a crucial role in the Diwali celebrations. By participating in these practices, devotees seek blessings for prosperity, purification, and a brighter future.
