Significance of Matangi Jayanti

Matangi Jayanti is celebrated on Shukla Paksha Tritiya during the month of Vaishakha, which marks the divine appearance of Goddess Matangi. She is regarded as a form of Tantric Saraswati, known for her association with wisdom, knowledge, speech, and the arts.

Goddess Matangi is worshipped in various forms such as Raja Matangi, Sumukhi Matangi, Uchchishta Matangi, Vashyamatangi, and Karnamatangi. Each form holds unique powers and is invoked for different spiritual benefits.

Who is Goddess Matangi?

Goddess Matangi is known for her graceful nature and immense power. She is also associated with eight divine Shaktis:

  1. Rati
  2. Preeti
  3. Manobhava
  4. Kriya
  5. Kshudha
  6. Ananga Kusum
  7. Ananga Madan
  8. Madan Lasa

Her worship is believed to bring perfection in speech, creativity, and household life. She bestows divine radiance and transforms even an ordinary voice into a powerful one. Through her blessings, one can gain insight into mystical knowledge and attain spiritual wisdom.

A verse from Purashcharyarnava glorifies her as:

अक्षवक्ष्ये महादेवीं मातङ्गी सर्वसिद्धिदाम्। अस्याः सेवनमात्रेण वाक्-सिद्धिं लभते ध्रुम्॥

This means that Goddess Matangi, seated at the sacred Akshavaksha, grants all types of spiritual accomplishments. Merely by serving her, devotees attain perfection in speech.

In many scriptures, the ten avatars of Lord Vishnu are said to correspond to the ten Mahavidyas, with Goddess Matangi belonging to the Shri Kula. The Mahavidyas are divided into two groups: Shri Kula and Kali Kula, and Matangi is associated with peace and gentleness.
